They collect information about individuals from a variety of sources and then aggregate the data for others to access or purchase. The information originates from an individual\u2019s activity that leaves a trail behind, such as purchasing merchandise, liking a social media post, buying a house, and registering to vote.<\/p>\n<p>There are three main categories of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.vice.com\/en_us\/article\/bjpx3w\/what-are-data-brokers-and-how-to-stop-my-private-data-collection\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">data brokers<\/a>: people search, consumer profile, and identity verification. A \u201cpeople search\u201d is a summary of personal information that a data broker aggregates from all over the Internet and displays on a dynamic webpage. A \u201cconsumer profile\u201d takes the information and places the individual into a marketing category to push certain products and services. An \u201cidentity verification\u201d service offers risk mitigation by analyzing data on an individual to verify accuracy and detect fraud.<\/p>\n<p>In a people search, the data displayed on an individual\u2019s profile often includes information from public records and social media. The information may also include details about an individual\u2019s relatives and neighbors. As a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.amp.legal\/blog\/internet-value-offers-data-privacy\/\">data privacy<\/a> concern, the&nbsp;information displayed on a profile could be&nbsp;ambiguous or inaccurate, which could have a negative effect on the person\u2019s reputation. For example, the profile could say the individual has court records when it is only referring to a speeding ticket archived in the public records.<\/p>\n<p>Information gathered by data brokers can potentially create problems for an individual. A criminal can gather an individual&#8217;s information to commit <a href=\"https:\/\/www.identitytheft.gov\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">identity theft<\/a>. Also, someone could use another\u2019s personal information for bad purposes such as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/story\/what-do-to-if-you-are-being-doxed\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">doxing<\/a>, which is distributing an individual&#8217;s personal information without permission.<\/p>\n<h3>Public Information<\/h3>\n<p>Data brokers may legally post \u201cpublicly available information\u201d about an individual online. However, under the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.experian.com\/blogs\/ask-experian\/credit-education\/report-basics\/fair-credit-reporting-act-fcra\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Fair Credit Reporting Act (FCRA)<\/a>, someone that pulls a consumer report cannot use the information for purposes such as credit, insurance, or employment screening. As an example, employers must get written permission from a job applicant or employee to use a consumer report. Also, employers must explain how they will use the information.<\/p>\n<h3>How To Opt-Out<\/h3>\n<p>Individuals&nbsp;can choose to \u201copt-out\u201d of having their aggregated information displayed on a data broker\u2019s website.
