Since its beginnings, the Internet provides a place to\u00a0find information and connect with other users. However, the current \u201cInternet of information\u201d is evolving into the \u201cInternet of value\u201d by using blockchain technology. This emerging web ecosystem promises to offer enhanced data privacy protections and accountability from companies\u00a0sharing their customers&#8217; personal data.<\/p>\n<p>Social media\u00a0companies are assessing ways to improve the way they share data and protect their customers. To improve data sharing, Facebook\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.politico.com\/newsletters\/morning-tech\/2018\/08\/06\/facebook-looks-to-advance-data-privacy-conversation-306614\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">announced<\/a> that it\u2019s developing guidelines for collaborating with Google, Microsoft, and Twitter. But protecting data presents challenges, such as blocking scams and false advertising. Digital Asset, a leading blockchain tech company, is developing a flexible platform that protects confidentiality and assures data integrity. The platform consists of \u201cpermissioned\u201d ledgers that only allow access to certain sections and \u201csegregated\u201d ledgers that use cryptographic hashes for accuracy.<\/p>\n<p>While the financial industry continues to develop new blockchain frameworks, social media providers are also exploring ways to utilize the technology. The founder of Richtopia, Derin Cag, <a href=\"https:\/\/cointelegraph.com\/news\/blockchain-shifting-from-internet-of-information-to-internet-of-value\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">explained various ways<\/a> that blockchain could benefit social media, including:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Preventing \u201cfake news\u201d through a rewards-based credit ratings system, which can be embedded into websites.<\/li>\n<li>Allowing users to \u201copt-in\u201d to data sharing where they are automatically paid when their data is sold to third parties.<\/li>\n<li>Improving automation using smart contracts where multiple social media platforms could concurrently interact on a user\u2019s behalf.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Looking forward, Internet users desire more control over their data. The users in the emerging \u201cInternet of value\u201d expect rewards for their loyalty. In the long run, companies that continue to make profits by deceiving customers will lose their market share.
